New Port Facility opens in Carriacou

October 5, 2018

Beausejour, Carriacou, Thursday, October 4th, 2018: After eighteen (18) months of construction work and modification of design, the Grenada Port Authority has finally opened its doors to it's E.C $3.4 Million port facility in Tyrell Bay, Carriacou.

The facility will relocate the operation of the island's main port duties from the unsafe Hillsborough facility to its new location in Tyrell Bay.

Mr. Carlyle Felix, General Manager of Grenada Port Authority, in outlining the details said that the facility is designed to handle passengers from international and regional ferry services.

Minister of Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs, Hon. Kindra Maturine-Stewart, in her remarks said that the new port facility will not only ease the burden of transacting business, but also allow an increase in the volume of business on the island.

She noted that the new port facility is now the envy by neighboring islands and will certainly set the standards for ports in the Grenadines.

Minister of Finance and Prime Minister of Grenada, The Right Hon. Dr. Keith Mitchell, in his remarks, singled out the efforts of Former MP and Minister of Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs, Hon. Elvin Nimrod, who played an integral part in the initiative.

Dr. Mitchell added that not only will the island receive a new port facility, but plans are also being laid by the Government and a Chinese Company for the expansion of the Lauriston Airport Runway to accommodate larger air planes.
